Welcome to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where Iceland's volcanic heart is beating. Here you will see the hot springs of Krýsuvík, the mud geysers of Hannuhver, lava fields covered with moss, and the breaks of the earth crust. Get ready to pop into the troll pool and cross the bridge between the continents!
What awaits you
Geothermal wonders of Iceland
We will travel through lava fields covered with gray-green moss to the active volcanic zone of Krýsuvík. Here, by Kleifarvatn lake, hot mud springs rush to the surface, merging into a thermal river. You will explore the cosmic landscapes of Krýsuvík, walking along special wooden paths and take photos of this beautiful and dangerous area. And in Gannuhver, which is located in the heart of the Global geopak of Reykjanes, you will meet the largest clay geyser in Iceland and listen to the legend of an evil spirit who was trapped here by a priest. We will watch the streams of boiling clay, shooting out from the ground a few meters high from a safe distance because their temperature reaches 300 degrees Celsius!
Troll pool and bird colonies
From the elements of fire we will go to the elements of water: the road will lead you to Brimketill — an amazingly picturesque natural pool, which was carved by the waves of the Atlantic in soft lava rock. According to the legend this place was chosen for swimming by the Icelandic trolls themselves. Swimming in Brimketill is dangerous due to the ocean surf — but, anyway, the pictures are great! After that we will move to the beach to the monument of the disappeared bird — the white-winged loon. In summer you will see the noisy nesting colonies of northern gannets on the coastal forests, and sometimes if you are lucky you can see the backs of the whales swimming not far from the coast.
Bridge between continents
When you reach the Reykjanes Peninsula, you will be on the border of two gigantic lithospheric plates and you will be able to walk from Europe to North America in a couple of minutes. You will appreciate the power of the local landscapes, learn how the shape of Iceland changes every year due to the divergence of plates. And of course you will walk along the bridge built over the break of the earth crust symbolizing the connection between the continents.
IMPORTANT: there is an active volcanic eruption on the peninsula now, which you can see (check the relevance with the guide)
